Gee Bugly I'd be over the moon if it drove like a new one :o. Hi backyard the induction setup is for straight gas it's an impco 425 carb on a carter thermoquod base sitting on top of a factory cast iron 4bbl manafold should be a good match for the 318 :) cheers Bryant

Ok started on the rust repairs to the floor pans today this is my first attempt at any thing like this so some of the images may be disturbing to some of you experianced restorers I am butt welding the joins so it hopefully won't look like a patchwork quilt . Tomorrow I hope to finish fully welding the joins and get the upper firewall section cut out and siting in place so it can be welded :) cheers Bryant :)

Bryant, looking good. You're a brave man butt-welding; I lap-weld everything where possible. (preferably by flanging one part so it ends more-or-less flush.)
However you do it, preparation is everything.

Looking good there, Bryant. What type of steel are you using- straight mild or zincanneal? I can't really see from the pictures. Zincanneal is probably the best in this application but if you use mild steel just make sure you paint it with a zinc rich primer for good protection against corrosion.

With the welding, just make sure that your getting good penetration so you effectively turn the patch into one piece with the rest of the floor. If you need to, get a block of copper or brass to put behind the weld and really get the heat into the weld.

you can flatten a piece of copper pipe at one end and use it
underneath where you are welding.

Thanks dieseldog and 353 I have been using a large piece of copper pipe with about 6 inches of one end flattened out it seems to be a good heat sink . Diesel I'm using 16 guage cold rolled sheet steel thanks for the tip on the zinc rich primer :) the more I weld the better the finish I'm hearing you about the penetration as I've been checking the underside of the welds as I go along cheers Bryant

Ok got the LH side done apart from some seam sealing and tidy up . Started on the RH side when this is done the cab will be rust free then I will tip it on its back so I can clean up the underside and strip and paint the cab so I can bolt it back on its chassis :)
