Photos of old Hume Highway - before freeway built was created by tom_1959
Hi
I have driven the Hume Fwy quite a few times between Sydney and Melbourne.
There are some massive cuttings for the freeway - for example just north of the Wagga Wagga / Sturt Hwy junction and also Conroy's Gap.
Would there be any photos of the old highway (say 1960s) at these locations?
Did the old highway simply go straight up a very still hill or did it try and climb it diagonally?
How did the old trucks go in the 1960s climbing the big hills? It would have been slow driving.
But then today trucks are going 40km/h on the freeway, it probably hasn't improved a huge amount.
Thanks.

Don't know if its quite what you want but its a cool old photo anyway.
Your looking at the corner of Reid and Murphy Street Wangaratta facing roughly North.
That makes the truck, an Inter Transtar?, heading south carrying a nicely tarped load.
The particular commonwealth bank building and the jewellers shop have been demolished and a new seventies style commonwealth bank has been built on the same site.
The two small shops next to the jewellers, (Hume Drapers) are still there but are now a homewares and a gift shop. The taller building you see above the fa

another wang photo, not of the hume hwy but a business located on the old hume hwy.
Alan Capp Holden, still there but changed to a Toyota dealership and holden has moved down the road a bit.
I reckon the old cars in the background would be worth more in todays values than the three chicky babes out front, what you reckon swishy? Seen a cockatoo?
