Would have been interesting to see something that size going through the hole-in-the-wall at Picton, or even further south through the viaducts at Yerrinbool- or Yanderra.

Would a set of tyres last the distance?

I know tractor tyres don't like running on pavement so figure these would suffer the same problem.

Any suggestions?

Tyres in those pics would have about 2/3 of tyre on road.
Had a measure up, tractor tyres have spaced narrow grips to enter the soil.
30 cm lug spacing, 6cm lug width and little overlap in centre 20% rubber on road.
Industrial tyre 15cm spacing 7cm lug width, that's 45% on ground plus the lugs overlap in the centre, a lot more rubber to carry the weight.

I believe there is some sort of privately owned vehicle collection down that way. The guy even went to the trouble of buying an Antar in the UK, so that he would have a representative of the type in the collection.

Hi Beaver, Phil Rye has acquired a large collection of ex SMA equipment including 2 x Antars from the UK.
This collection is just southwest of Cooma at Berridale

Just been through my old 'Engineering Features of the Snowy Mountains Scheme' book and not one photo of the Antars, so can't comment conclusively on the rego plate (never saw an Antar in the flesh in my time, they were retired by then - mid 70s, but had spoken to guys who operated them, and did the guidance signalling as they reversed loads down inclined narrow tunnels etc).). However my understanding is that they were a SMA vehicle, ie. not owned and operated by contractors, so should have had '"Z" plates. All of the SMA vehicles I was associated with had "Z" plates. Later they changed to NSW plates, and they reserved SMA000 to SMA999 for their own use.
