Okay Ron is pretty well right on.
Spose now I should tell why I was doing it and what I was actually doing.
Sorry in advance if this is long winded and boring.
Between the cross head and the base plat on the floor there is a cotton reel shaped steel bobbin.
This bobbin comes out of a shaftline between the gearbox and waterjet in one of the boats.
More description after this pic
So what im doing is apply a load to a lever with a known length, a torque arm. Apply that torque to the cotton reel which has strain gauges attached to it and you can measure the change in the metals molecular structure as a twist. Then Julious Sumner Miller can formulate a torque reaction curve. No Basil hasnt lost the plot.
We do this when we build a boat and it doesnt make contract speed so we can measure true engine power being delivered. There is often dispute as to wether engine is making full power or water jet pitch is off....only way to settle argument.
Lots of other boring calcs and stuff involved and I wont go there.

i can't say what its does but i can note the obvious
theres a portapower applying pressure at one end and some sort of a digital Nm/scales/measuring device at the other, a switch magnet with what appears to be a lathe centre (for making sure that work will be round (in this case flat ))
on second thought it could be some to do with one FB drive shaft going off the 999 : bolt hole on the bottom flange and most probably the top as well
