S&M Fox Coal Trucks was created by diesel-den
Hi Fellas
Just wondering if anyone has any photos of S&M Fox coal trucks that came from somewhere around Narellean area i think. As a kid i lived along side the Scarborough coal mine ( called south Clifton) and these trucks carted coal in and around the the area in the late 50's & 60's. The trucks were inter AS 160's i think blue in colour with the number of the truck on the door in yellow with allum bins. A fellow buy the name of Don Toovey drove truck 73 and if my memory serves me right truck 96 was driven by a young bloke by the name of Bobby he keep his truck in immaculate condition.
S&M Fox some years later carted out of Coalcliff mine with the all new big AA model inter and Don was first to get one number 115. I'd get a trip to Port Kembla and back before school what a buzz in that new truck. So if anyone has any pics of those trucks wack them up or anything else to add to this thread go ahead as im interested.

Camma, Try either: Stan & Millie Fox.
Or: S & M Fox Investments.
I'd imagine Samantha Fox is now in Silicone valley

Diesel Den,The rigid coal trucks were Inter AA 180's.The original 6 cylinder petrol motors were replaced with Perkins 6.354 with manually operated exhaust brake(SGV).These trucks had the disconcerting habit of snapping off the stub axles. Not only did you have no steering but also no brakes (vacuum hydraulic). The company had the stubs welded back on and put the vehicle back into service.Complaints were made to the NSW Transport, but as long as the welder was a certified boiler maker it was quite legal.
I can't post you a photo as all my photos are residing in some back room at the Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs, due to lack of interest.
Cheers,Pete

sailorv. thanks for the info mate,i suppose the aa180 was somewhat the better truck available in its price range in those days, being boggie drive/diesel and able to haul 12 ton.the vacuum brakes would have been a bit sketchy around this neck of the woods; if your not going down hill you were climbing up. very steep into some of these pits. shame about the piccys bieing so far away.would have liked a geek at them . den
