Last Valiant was built in august 1981 by Mitsubishi. Have a look at compliance plate on one of the cars built after Mitsubishi took over in 1980.

If he reckons it's a 1980 build .. why doesn't he show a pic of the compliance plate?? .. :-?

The D5N was built from 1972 to 1979, according to all records. That's not to say that some of the Dodges built in the last month of 1979 were not sold, and therefore not registered, until the early months of 1980.

A vehicle was often registered as the year model, in the year it was first registered, not the actual build date .. and it's not the first time, new vehicles have sat in yards for many months, before they were sold.
In 1988, I bought a new dual cab Hilux that had sat unsold for 7 months.

The compliance will have the build date which is part of the VIN number on it on Chrysler vehicles and then it will have the compliance date on it. The compliance date is not alway the same as build date. On imported vehicles this shows up more as they have there compliance plates fitted when they arrive in Australia.

Might have still been some built in 80, they had to use up stocks of cabins and parts.

VIN number on these trucks is as an example
D5N216ODKA0600001
D5N2160D is the vehicle model code
KA06 is the build date
00001 is the build number

K is 1978
A is January
06 is the day
So a build date of 06/01/1978 anything built in 1980 will have to have MA01 in this part of the VIN number.
I guess D5N's would not have been a hot seller in the late 70's and a few could have been left over. I know of a 78 CL valiant ute that was not sold till 1980 and it was sold as a new car then with CM books and full warranty but its still a 1978 model.
