AL110 restoration, the early stages was created by wombat 46
We are nearly finished the new shed, so we can get the AL under cover as it has lived outside for the last 30 odd years that i know of.
My Son has been tinkering away and the chassis is stripped down, cab off, and the chassis is now painted and we need somewhere is keep it so the brakes and fuel lines can be looked at.
Part of my job will be the rust repairs to the body work which will be quite a challenge.
The body is a Aussie Ute type or 'Gentleman's Ute' as i have heard them called.
I will try to post some pics up, just need to read up and get it done.
As with most 'too hard' jobs i had a friend look at it a year or so back and he bought a 1.2mm thick sheet to do the rust repairs, but nothing ever happened, so we brought the AL back home.
I am sure the sheet is too thick, as i have read that the new has to match the old to keep warping to a minimum.
My first question is what thickness steel plate do i buy to fold and weld in the body patch plates?
I am hoping to buy a sheet this coming week, is it just black sheet?
Many thanks
Jim

Wombat it would be better if the patch was the same thickness as the cabin, so I would be cutting a bit of the rusted area out and measure its's thickness but at a guess I would think been a old Inter cabin maybe 19 or 20 gauge.
But me been not a panel beater W.W.I.K.

PS. Swishy has a good imformation post on here how to upload photo's from your computer

Yes thanks for the chart!
I was thinking it was about 0.9mm- 1.0mm but it is safer to measure as you say.

What gearbo? 3 speedo on right side of column? Or on the floor? If 3 on the tree, any chance of a photo of the linkage set up at the box, not the column?

Wow,
I just measured the steel this arvo,
there is alot of 1.2mm or 18 guage, mainly the curved sections, but what really surprised me was that there is alot of 16 guage or 1.5mm as well!
so at this stage i will go with the 18 guage sheet i have and see how it turns out.

Hello Jim,
We had a professional who was used to more recent cars do our '38 Nash which had 16G metal, he found that size too difficult to fold when replacing rusted areas on rear of front and back mudguards so used 1mm zincanneal.
As an amateur I have used this material on later projects with success.
After 20 years this recent photo of the Nash shows no problems.
David.
