What's the best oil I should I use in my 34yo V8 Perkins 540? :-/

Hey mate, the best oil to use is a simple monograde oil like straight SAE 40. Just check the service rating on the oil, go for a CD, CE, CF or CG rating.

The problem with modern oils is that the are very good at stripping carbon deposits away, which in an old, worn engine means it will become noisier, start burning oil and go down in power.

I use Delo Silver Sae 40 with good results. The thing to remember is that when the engine was built, she was designed to run on a CC rated oil, so a CG oil will be well in excess of the engines requirements.

In my old mastiff 540 powered I used 15/40 valvoline diesel oil ... Even with the injector pump tickled slightly for more hp ... That engine never died
