looking desperately for something to read, I turned to a book one of my daughters gave me, "best Australian trucking stories" by Liz Martin and her mate, hoping I might find a nugget of a yarn there besides all the old rehashed stories of the Goverment road train or Rotinoff's, stories beaten to death, most of us have towed or given assistance to families stranded on the road due to their inexperience with long distance travel. It painted truck drivers in a poor light and the public reading it (if anyone did) would have a dim view of truckies, like the poor old farmer in the book, on his hands and knee's begging for a tow with his family to the next town, offering bribes to the "Hero" who reluctantly hooked them up and took of down the road a full belt just about causing the poor old guy a heart attack. When carting hogsheads of wine from the Berri distillery to Hay I towed a family and their car right across the hay plains to the edge of town at about 25 mph to allow them control and comfort, and I asked THEM if they wanted a tow, (see picture) messed up there! Another tragic story of a driver who rolled his truck killing a child and ruining a womans life, all because he was worried about some fool in a car having enough room to pass, ignoring the safety of other people, the book should be called "The saddest Australian truck stories" as it casts a poor light on the hundreds of truckies who every day help someone in need, doing good deeds, of course this doesn't sell like the negative stuff. I can't count the number of cars with caravans I have pulled out of creekbeds when I was running the South road from Alice, of course there was a bit of self interest there as I couldn't cross when they were stuck there!! Now they are talking about another book, PLEASE, enough damage done. >:(

anything above the reasoning of a mongrel dog is a waste of time

It's the old story, nobody wants to know about the good deeds, only the trumped up trash which probably is not true anyway ,and little minded people take as gospel truth.
