Hi
My dad used to work for BP in port melbourne in the early 70s
He drove a twin steer single drive tanker with a two stroke diesel it had a 6 speed overdrive gear box and went real well on the trips down to san remo..
what happened to all theses trucks

There are a few of those Commers that have been restored but I don't know of any of that twin steer / single drive configuration ( known as a 'Chinese Six' )

I recall seeing a few of those "chinese six" Leylands in NZ in the 1950's. They were called by Leyland the "Steer" gave better load sharing than a conventional but a little less than a bogie without the weight penalty of the tandem.

Hi
The truck I am talking about was defiantly a comer twin head model It did have the muffler under the front bumper bar. BP had a few of them because in those days they had to use English trucks.
Maybe my timing is wrong but Western Transports depot used to be near the corner of Bat st and Beach roar in Port Melbourne.

CMV in Adelaide did a twin steer conversion on Commers from the early R7's right through. I don't have any photos of later ones but I have seen them in the past, exactly as you described
