'Bump'...G'day Mike10,member all the cabovas well. As a kid seemed every second truck on the 'beach' road was a 'MILLS', 'L.B's' or 'HIGHWAY HAULAGE'. Still see the odd 'MILLS' built flat top on 'supers' about. .

I alerted aviation enthusiasts to this thread, asking about VH-UFU. The reply: 'This is a DH60 Gypsy Moth first registered in 1927 to Qantas. It was later modified into a DH60G and had many registered owners including Qantas (twice) and Charles Ulm. That makes it pretty famous and a great pic, thanks indeed'.
In turn, this makes me suspect that the photo shows the delivery from the docks to the hangar in 1927.

The photo is 1929 at earliest.
When first imported UFU carried the registration G-AUFU, as Aust was a member of the British Commonwealth (G-Exxx was England, G-NZxxx was New Zealand, G-Cxxx was Canada) It was in January '29 that the G-A prefix was replaced in Australia (eg. G-AUFU became VH-UFU), with aircraft being given 12 months to comply in repainting the rego.
Photo of UHU bearing it's pre-'29 rego of G-AUFU:

Great finds. I hadn't thought that the aircraft looked new, and had suspected that this was retrieval after a forced landing. So now, the truck must be a few years old at the time when it carried UFU. I had gone 1920s from the appearance of the truck.
