When I was 16 a mate and I hand painted a 1948 Landrover (you could get car brushing enamel in the 60's). We did all the galvanised strips, bumpers, hinges, window frames etc in Silvafros.

Looked like a rat with a gold tooth - very flash.

Remember my dad overpainting varnished wooden bedheads with silvafros, then you could (apparently) use normal paint to give a more modern look.

The sandblasters used an industrial paint on steelwork looked a bit similar,a couple of the kiwis had painted their houses with it.I went to visit one ,he lived up near Tara, directions were ....look for the road with all silver houses, mines second last.I knew when i was getting close ,houses all over painted silver grey. When we were doing tanks we used an 8ton load of paint every two days.

Way back when you could still buy "Silverfrost" paint, before the acrylic age, we used it to coat the head gaskets on LOW compression engines, Chev 4s, side valve Mopars and the like, to re-use a gasket. I did one on my 26 Chev four times before replacing it. One good coat, let dry overnight and then a wet coat on fitting.

If I remember correctly the old paint was enamel based with aluminium flakes. I don't think the modern paints would do the same thing.

I was surprised to pull the heads on a TD 18 IH crawler and fund silverfrost or silverfros paint on the head gaskets, dunno that it would have done anything on diesel
But the head gaskets came off ok and were reused so thats something I guess

Always used ally paint on headgaskets.....I think Falcon gaskets came with the silver paint on them. Not relevant, but here s a tip for any old petrol motor with corrosion leaks in the gasket.......use silastic to seal.....its amazing ,it lasts in flexible form inside combuation cham, bers. Completely fixed repeated blown gaskets on the Continental 6s in the Hysters.Silastic can be used in place of a headgasket, and it lasts. Not fancy blue stuff either, just old $4 tube black.
