I remember Temples Transport & Wills Transport with B train trailers in the early 80s. Both companies carted off the Fremantle wharf carting 2 x 20' containers. The trailers were both bogie axle and were made to be within the 19m length limit. As time went on and triaxle A trailers became common the bogie A trailers could not handle higher weights and became obsolete.
The story was that they were the first B trains in Australia.

They were called B trains here on the left coast........the term B double seemed to come from the right coast and is now more common here.

For quite a few years the common B train configuration on the wharf was a twin steer, bogie drive prime mover with a triaxle A trailer and a bogie
B trailer - good for 2 x 23t boxes.

A pet annoyance of mine ...... What is an A trailer and what is a B trailer ...... To me a lead trailer is the B and a rear trailer is an A ..... What say you?

You might Laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at you because you're all the same

just a note for you all B-Doubles started in Canada in about 1973 and have been in NZ since the late 1970's, they where introduced in to WA in 1983 and into QLD in 1984 with NSW following almost straigt away, the first B-Doubles where in VIC as Milk tankers for MG in 1980's and the permit system was in place and cost around $12000 per year. ;)

11. What is a B-double?
A prime-mover towing two semi-trailers.
The first trailer is a lead semi-trailer (A trailer), the second is a conventional semi-trailer (B trailer).
The lead semi-trailer (A trailer) has a turntable at its rear, which means another semi-trailer can connect without the use of a converter dolly.
B-triple are variations of this concept where three semi-trailers are connected.

The above taken from www.mainroads.wa.gov.au/usingroads/heavy...erfaq/Pages/FAQ.aspx

But you can call them whatever you like !!

Cheers, Neil
