Saw this early truck chassis in the Flinders ranges recently and I thought it had some unusual features . Anyone got any ideas what it might have been ? Rob

....could it be the remains of some sort of old steam lorry?

Doubt it would be a steam truck. Chassis and springs look way to light weight for steam truck.

Plus the wooden spokes wouldn't take the strain.

The suspension is very interesting. It certainly wouldn't be a heavy duty vehicle if you have a look at the front king pins and linkages. I would suspect due to its size etc maybe something like a Traffic or an Autocar might be likely.

The method of holding the back springs in place that is the very interesting part!!!

Has the hallmarks of American origin and the spring sliders are quite unique. Being chain drive the axle was held in position by torque rods to maintain constant chain tension. There were a number of different versions of this arrangement in the early era. The spokes on the rear wheels seem rather crude and might be steel spokes welded to the original hub and directly to the bands of solid tyres.

Hi,

Murray Langford's 1923 GMC has similar rear spring setup. So guessing it may be from the same era?????
