Large oil capacity sumps

Large oil capacity sumps was created by Bonester
I was surprised to see that the latest Detroit DD13 and DD15 engines hold 40 and 45 litres of oil respectively. I would have thought that would have taken a long time to come up to temperature and I would hate to see the service bill for an oil change.
Would it not make sense to run a dry sump? Surely a scavenge pump wouldn't add too much complication?

i personaly think a high capacity sump is a good thing as lots of oil means better cooling for engine parts , oil will transfere heat away , obviosly a oil cooler would help , i think most big bangas need 2 x 20 liter drums of oil for a service
my little 6V53 holds 30 liters, giveor take a few leaks

The isx cummins take 42 to 48 depending if they are in an areodyne or a bonnet, C15 cats take 38. The new detroits are running the services out to 40000km instead of 20000km so they will be cheaper to service in theory.

To really know when the oil needs changing depends on a few factors however, the best way is to get an oil analysis done every oil change and record the Km's and or engine hours and after a few oil changes, you will notice a trend. You then can alter the engine hours/Km according to the pattern of use and oil sample properties.
For $25-$30, Money well spent. I've had a couple of examples where fuel was making its way into the sump and the oil analysis picked this up and upon further investigation, it was found that one of the injector 'O' rings had failed.
I recommend oil samples for a good piece of mind.
