TE20 Tractor - Help

More

G'day, I am writing this unbeknown to my frustrated husband who is slowly restoring an old TE20 Grey Fergie. This old tractor runs as smooth as anything - for the first half hour, then coughs and splutters etc after she warms up. My husband has renewed the coil, new carby kit, new fuel lines, new plugs, new radiator, but still it only runs smoothly for half an hour and then just starts missing and farting. He lets her cool down and away she goes again for a while and then no good again. Any suggestions? Have asked a couple of old farmers around the ridges, and no help so far. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks, Farmer Daves wife...

Some spark plugs break down when hot
if u're game
with the engine runnin eratically remove a spark plug leed to hear any difference in the tune of the engine
do each plug seperatley n replace b 4 removing next leed this could/would tell U the cylinder # of the culprit

Or if you are a chicken like me ;D, before the engine is started, pull back the spark plug lead insulating cap and then when the engine is running, just short out the plugs, one at a time, with a screwdriver.
Saves getting a belt to upset your heart pacemaker ;) Rod.

Okay, firstly, thank you all SO much for your replies, and yep I reckon we will get to the bottom of this if it is the last Fergy on earth. WE WILL NOT BE BEATEN!!!

No, not the condenser, its been replaced.

There is no water in the sump, so the head must be OK.

Have checked the plugs, and taken leads off one at a time and seems to be no problems.

If the head was cracked, wouldnt there be water in the sump??

We have had this tractor for about 2 years now and it has always done it. Most of the time it gets parked out of sight, because he just cant stand to even look at it drives him absolutely nuts trying to get it right, and is now suggesting a box of matches and a gallon of petrol, which will really fix it!!!

So, come on you guys, get your thinking caps on. I would love to see him happily choofing around on this thing, instead of swearing at it.

Regards, FDW

RE: If the head was cracked, wouldnt there be water in the sump??
Not nessesarily
a small crack in the combustion chamber of head will let water in n may B make it missfire
or leaky head gasket weepin into combustion chamber
should B noticable by a different colored sparkplug @ the bizzness end

Hay

But Wot do I no

I'm only a steer n wheel attendant

G'day FDW, You say the coil has been replaced, but is it the right one? Coils of the type that need a resistor to drop the voltage can overheat within a half hour and cause problems if they are used on a straight 12 volt system. I have had this problem myself, the coil became so hot it could not be touched. Ray

Hey Swishy,
I am lost in cyberspace at the moment, had some computer problems and now can do everything except log onto the HCVC forum. Something to do with my security settings Bruce thinks.
Now can you suggest to that lady with the Fergy to check the dizzy cap, especially the centre contract.
Had that problem on a car once.
Cheers Pete
