shipton tractors in tassie have a brand new deep reduction starter that'll fit.. They're chasing $550 for it, i'm thinking that might be a smart move.

I have heard the starters on these things are almost as useful as a chocolate kettle ;)

Can't recall the starter giving much trouble, but the tractors were bad starters. Providing you had a tin of
aero start and good batteries you could mostly get
going.
They were good performers, good to drive but not known for their reliability. From memory they were priced right, and in areas that had a good Inter dealer they sold OK.
They replaced the A554 and were the last Inter tractor of that style.
I can't recall them ever being referred to as an A654 it was always an International 564.

Not sure I didn't hear someone bad mouthing a 564 Inter.... but I am a bit deaf.... 564 came out as a souped up 554, with a different front clip, headlights inside the grill area, the Power steering came of the main drive and not an add on pump and was rated at 64 HP. It was also a front entry not climb over the drawer bar.

Mine certainly had the grunt and traction it was supposed to have until its untimely demise as a result of my own stupidity last year.

The 554 is an upgrade on the AWD6 then AWD7... all four models have an uncommon starter motor, the rotate the opposite way (and are mounted the opposite way) to most other vehicles. I am told a good autolec / motor re-winder can fix them... usual problem is cranking for ever... if the glow plugs work, and used properly she will fire easy, :D, otherwise Mr Aerostart is required.. :'(

The 554 is (54 hp) fairly common, PlayinK123 the one in your picture is a 554 with that front, I am not up with serial numbers, yours may have the 564 motor.

The 564 also had a large comfortable seat, probably the
the best that was fitted to any tractor of that era.

PlayinK123, if your looking for a starter for the old girl, I would imagine it is the same as a 554. Now the starter for a 554 is also used on these models as per my Bepco parts book.....

Tractor
series: 43
743, 743XL,
series: 44
644, 744, 844, 844S, 844XL,
series: 45
745S, 745XL, 845, 845XL,
series: 46
1046, 1246, 946,
series: 55
1055, 1055XL, 1255, 1255XL, 1455, 1455XL, 955, 955XL,
series: 56
1056, 1056XL, 856, 856XL, 956, 956XL,
series: Classic
523, 553, 554, 624, 654, 724, 824,

Now they also list 3 reduction starters, in addition to the Lucas replacement.

I have a feeling it is a CAV/Lucas M45G or an M50G. It that is the case, these can be found on most Perkins engines fitted to Massey's. You'd just have to get one with the right amount of pinion teeth and set it up for the right rotation.

The bloke I bought it off and a certain tractor wreckers weren't very fond of the starters on this old girl but maybe they never had working glow plugs eh..

A nice comfy seat was certainly on the to do list as I won't be the pilot for a few months (due to a flight with a convertible tipper) so the missus has that job ha ha..

And thanks for that dieseldog that's certainly given me a better idea of what I'm chasing..

Gee you fellas amaze me with your wealth of knowledge :o :o
