Front-end scoop and backhoe, working on the extension of Bendigo tram depot (Vic.). Tues.29.5.01. (Jeff Bounds). I can't guess the make, but by 2001 was everything Japanese?

ISTBC, but JCB is the make and I think 4CX would be the model. I don't know where they're made.

JCB is still made in the UK.

The Poms are quick to point this out to us.

At one stage (recently) a JCB engine held the world speed record for diesel engines. I know trivia but interesting.

How times have changed, been so long since I've seen a backhoe on a site, can't remember when.
Wonder if modern road laws have restricted them from driving on the roads? You used to see them mixing with traffic all the time.
Excavators have all but taken over.

There's still plenty of backhoes around in this neck of the woods. There's even a couple of wheeled excavators too.
