We may laugh but someone has put a fair amount of work into the engine swap.
No doubt the original engine couldn't be rebuilt "just one more time".
They're probably very proud of the bike as well.

I'm with Morris here, read an article , may have been in Just Bikes, back a few years, where Lombardini, well known stationary engine maker, had signed a deal with some Indian mob.
On trials they got some phenomonal mpg out of it!

It was like standing beside a vibrating compacting roller at roadworks.
Based on the brand’s long-running platform, the Taurus shared the Bullet’s round headlight, metal fenders, teardrop gas tank, and bench seat. Instead of a petrol-powered single, though, the Taurus housed a 325cc diesel engine mated to a four-speed gearbox. The engine boasted Royal Enfield’s smallest engine capacity and the power output reflected as much. With just 6.5 horsepower, 11 lb-ft of torque, and a 40-mph top speed, the Taurus was more of a wanderer than a raging bull.
However, the docile diesel achieved upwards of 90km/l, which converts to over 200 mpg. Along with its impeccable fuel economy, the Taurus engine further reduced maintenance costs. Royal Enfield ditched the turbo and intercooler unit found on conventional diesel mills, making it easy for customers to work on as well. That basic architecture also made production easier and the model benefitted from the low diesel prices of the period.
On the other hand, the engine’s high compression ratio produced heavy vibrations, with users complaining of wrist and shoulder issues as a result. Like most old diesel powerplants, The Taurus also emitted thick black smoke from the single exhaust. Despite its unmatched mpg, the Taurus’ output couldn’t pass India’s increasingly stringent standards by 2000. Thus, Royal Enfield discontinued the model, eliminating one of the only diesel motorcycles ever mass-produced.

Years ago, a friend of mine, Ray, imported a diesel motorbike from India. I do not know the brand as bikes do not have enough wheels to interest me but I think he is/was a member on here so may input some details.

I am not a bike guy at all, however I do recall reading a artical on a conversion to diesel on Royal Enfield, this an Australian bike magazine I think
I seem to recall they werent offered out here and someone built their own based off the Indian version
No matter, it was good on fuel, I do recall that much

Paul, Royal Enfield brought the Diesel Powered Taurus, to try & combat all the Street/Footpath Mechanics from converting the Petrol powered Bullet..
I spent a couple of Months In India back in '97 & Had no problem finding markets like Lang posted where there was always a few Motorbike Mechanics to be found more often than Not putting a Lombardi Diesel in an Old Bike Frame..
I also saw quite a few WLA Harley Frames with Lister or Petter Diesel Motors Fitted.. At Idle the Footboards used to touch the Ground/Road surface...
I'll try & dig out my old Photos, as I'm sure I've got a few Pics...!!
