May be an idea to check that the flywheel is on tight
while you have it pulled down. Have heard that they can
be a source of trouble.

Big Bully factory Lanz ring compressor was a 1-ring at a time job.
Piece of 3/8" square bar rolled to the correct diameter, then with each end bent out at 90 degrees to form handles.
Had the big micrometer to measure the piston diameter buried somewhere too.
Lost the set-to-length bar so it wasn't much use.

hi john

when i put the pistons back in my john deere D model, i just joined 2 say 4inch hose clamps together to make a big one , it would not matter if you joined 4 together , all you need to remember is to be clean , i just went in 1 ring at a time ,but if you wanted to ,if you got some thin sheet of tin or some thing to wrap aroung the rings and put a couple of clamps around the outside of that , plenty of oil to let it all slip ;)
