Bedford A2 Rear Brake Drums was created by Blugreen
Hi.
I am trying to remove the rear drums off my 55 A2 but am having issues.
I have removed the castle nut and tried bearing pullers but with no luck at all.
Any ideas?
TIA.
Mark

Are you sure the brakes aren't locked on?

Wheels rotate freely so not bound brake shoes just rust over time I expect.
So far I have heated, cooled, hit, broke a set of bearing pullers, rebuilt them double strength, used RP7 but no luck. I put so much pressure on the wheel stud plate it has slightly warped and will need to be straightened.
I have left the bearing pullers torqued up over night in the hope that it might let go over time.
Other side is bound up the same.
If they are not free I may try the driving option.

Just had that problem with a Fargo recently. Someone had put new shoes on with a worn out drum. Amazing what that small lip in a drum will hold.
We used a puller made from another wheel centre, the drum cracked, but it was stuffed anyway.

Normally if the shoes are holding it ,you can still get a bit of free play and work out what is holding it.
The problem is the axil taper is seized onto the brake hub.
My J1 Bedford has the same problem.
One side came off easy, the other side is a different story. I have used heat, pullers, hitting the edge of hub with a hammer while using a 10 ton puller and heat, driving around with the castellated nut loose with a load on the truck and still wont let go .
If I had a spare hub, I would run the torch down the side of the hub close to the key or maybe both sides making a good cut near the axil taper.
Then put on the puller and try again.
If you have a spare brake drum. you may be able to cut a hole in the one on the axil to give axcess to the bearing retainer cover and undo the bolts and remove the axil and put in a press.

I have a similar problem with my J1. However, my brake drum is totally seized on the rear left wheel. Compounding my problem is I have never seen inside one of these and I don't know how it all comes apart.
Does anyone have a manual or schematics they'd be willing to post? :-[

Oh, tapered axles. We made a puller for my Inter 110 out of a wheel with the same stud pattern, (sacrificed a Ford rim) We welded a flat bar across the centre of the wheel with a big bolt a bit smaller dia than the axle mounted through the flat. We did the wheel up as you would, then screwed the big bolt through the centre of the wheel until tight. Then hit the big bolt head to release the drum. There is a special tool for FX/FJ Holdens as they also have tapered axles.
