it could be anything plugs points leads condensor disy cap rotor worn disy shaft point gap coil ignition switch loose wiring conections bad earth valve clearence burnt valve cracked head head gasket vacume leaks worn butterfly shaft leaking brake booster crook carbie bad fuel * unleaded fuel has a verry short life span arround 6 weeks it looses its octane [no bang ] water in fuel or the carby full of water blocked jets or even the fuel pump on its way out [not surplying enough to meet demand ] or even the accelerator pump not working if you leave a veichle sitting for a long time the fuel evaporates in the carby bowl leaving a white powder this may block carby jets all the best don

Sharon, it's most probably the spark plug leads. I've had a similar problem with my 345 V8 and new leads fixed it. Also try looking at the engine at night with the lights off to see if there is sparks visible when running. I had a worn ignition wire shorting intermittently on the chassis that took me ages to track down.

If that doesnt work, pull out the spark plugs and look for one with a cracked insulator or something slightly different about it. Number the leads so you dont mix them up when refitting.
If it is an ACCO C1800 it is probably 1970 not 1980 vintage.

some of the 392s had problems with the valve seat inserts if the motor has been allowed to overheat at some stage

Hi all
Thanks for the replies.
My truck is actually a 1985 model Engine number V392LC1624006 its serial number is 6193484
Info off compliance plate.

I use it to cart my horses around.
The carby has been rebuilt but it did not help.
The funny thing is when you run it on Gas it seems fine.
Thanks for your replies.

I have a Butterbox ACCO and it missed on number 7.

I did all the usual plugs, points, leads, cap, coil, condenser, etc, to no avail.

Turned out the Hydraulic Lifters were stuffed and didnt open or shut the valves.
new set of lifters from the USA, and she is still fine 10 years later.

Sharon,

The funny thing is when you run it on Gas it seems fine.

It maybe crap in the fuel tank or fuel lines then. You'll need to pull the tank and al the lines out and give them a good clean.

Sharon. Was the carby profesionally rebuilt or a home job. Not saying you (or whoever did it) don't know what your doing, but something may have been missed in the process. To me it still sounds like a carby problem.
Runs fine on gas crapp on petrol.

Never had it happen to me but have heard others talk of the older style brass float wearing a hole in the base and not floating any more when it is running on petrol.
Basically, it is flooding with fuel.

Another thing to check. Has the gap on the points closed up?? Worth a look too.

I am probably way off the mark, but that's my 2 cents worth.
