I am asking this question on behalf of Allen who has not yet got himself logged in.
ask on the forum for me as to whether the 1952 Austin Lodestar 4.0L engine is the same as the later 1960 model engine I would be appreciative and maybe that person would know if there was a difference in the gearbox ratios.
You can tell whoever to email answers to me at
astevens AT rfcsvicnc.com.au
or I will pass the reply on.

Right you lot, I think I might have to get offended, I gob off about the wealth of knowldge this forum spouts and ask one silly little question about a truck engine and get flattened by the dearth of response.
apparently one is a "highspeed motor" with bigger valves or something.....
Now in the bush Austins in the 1960's were like Commodores today... every where .......... and though not a common topic here.... surely someone knows the answer???? > > >

Thanks Dave,
I will report back after I ring.
My mate has to do an engine rebuild so he can come to Alice Springs, he has got both and would like a heads up on which will be the better option. Hopefully Peter can shed some light

Hello Sarge, I have some information that might be helpful from a 1954 Loadstar service manual - it details some differences with the high-speed motor;
Valve timing 5 deg earlier.
Piston material aluminium alloy not cast iron.
Three compression rings and one oil scaper.
Zenith 42 VI-8 carb (not 30 VM)
Oil bath cleaner.
DM6 Distributor not DXM6A
Plug gap .025-in vs .018 in.
There is mention of the valve head diameter for the high speed but not the normal
Also some differences in clearances on piston skirts and rings and valve guide length and clearances - possibly a problem?
The manual states that the high speed motor was fitted to 'some' 5 ton models. It does not have any mention of differences in gearbox ratios but does state the 5 ton models having the different rear axle ratio or even an Eaton 2 speed diff.
I hope this is of some help.
Josh.

Josh, thankyou for the information, I will pass it on, Alan tells me he has the two speed diff and the truck gets along nicely at about 100kph, or at least did.
I was with you Swishy, but I now put Butterbox/Perkins/100kmh into one sentence .... without reference to falling from aeroplanes.... so perhaps almost anything is possible. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
