'twas having a chat with Swishy tonight and mention was made of his old Kenny 1/2 truck bought new in 1972....

tell us all about your ancient old working jigger, no matter what it is, to see how faithful a working truck can be 8-) 8-) 8-)

Tective yes the KW 1/2 truck waz bought new in 1972
360th truck to roll outa Bayswater...
Was V6-71 238 HP on Jakes (now 8V-71 318 HP) twaz RTO-9515 (now RTO 9513) R170 Single drive diff @ 5.29:1. 110" W/B.AirStart & fitted wiff a Tulsa 20.000lb chain drive winch to B used to fold the gooseneck Floats
the reason for such a short primover twaz to gain max load lengths with our X10dable semi trailer without permits or escorts etc..now the rules haz changed n a lot aof length is ok and today U need 650 HP for a 10 t tray truck LOL

Bloody short WB, be a bit hairy bobtail wouldn't it?

I have noticed the, shall we say, classic nature of your gear Swishy. What was the last new truck you bought and what are the reasons to stick with the old gear?

wiff the old bangers n sumthing goes rong U no wot or where to look

the latest Truck twaz a pre luvd 1998 Mack CH
= CRAP mainly cos of the pewter etc n U never kno wot the problem iz
n u gota take it to mack to solve the prob n a lot of $$$$$$ Could fix it (COULD)

Also the pewter wont get the power to the ground wen u want it n miss n a lot of traffic light changes etc

That must be frightening bobtail, although the winch would add some weight.
Reminds me of one of our Beavers, dad cut her back to 121" WB but he was using the first foot of the tape and he made the big mistake.
She ended up 109" and he still didn't wake up, even when he had to get the propshaft shortened where normally you just drop off the centre bearing/front shaft.
It only dawned when the fuel tank was too long to fit between the front mudguard and the drive wheels.
I drove her to Brisy for a trade in and every time I touched the brakes the rear end lifted off the road.

G'day Fellas

You've struck a chord with me and I just had to chime in re older workin gear.

While like most farmers we utilise older trucks to get the job done i can relate more so with tractors.

Like Swishy we operate tractors in our Ag contracting business that we have owned from new.......... That could be up to 30 years ago and tens of thousands of hours of reliable service :D

We run a mix of newer and older machines but ultimately I have gone back to what I know and understand. In fact I just got rid of a mid 00's tractor and replaced in with a mid 80's model that Mr Swish shifted to the boat for me. I don't think anyone would argue that once upon a time things were made to last forever, now its more about lasting until your repayments end so you can go and get another one ;)

As far as operators go I can certainly appreciate new gear when it comes to comfort and features things have advanced so I have no criticism of new gear or those that go that way I just see it as a personal choice. Like Swishy said if it is what you have grown with you build an understanding of what goes wrong when it does and can fix it yourself. I find I can live with the odd breakdown when I know the failed part has simply run its course and worn out, in tractors at least there is nothing more frustrating than being pulled up with codes up and lights flashing because of a failed sensor >:(

Not much on the old girls that can't be patched up or cabled tied on to see you out till the end of the day ;)

I enjoy the rebuilding and jazzing up, fresh coat of two pack, some new stickers and out they go looking like new. I find our clients are just as impressed with an immaculately presented 20-30 year old tractor turning up as a newy.

Anyway, my two cents worth

Long live the old bangers, built to last 8-)

good on you classic truckin got to agree with almost every thing you say only thing I would add is one of the reasons I run old tractors trucks ect is I would much rather have that money paid off the mortgage and sleep easier because I guess farming is like running truck's it all can go pair shaped over night and if you are not paying off a couple of hundred grand each year it makes it a lot easier to get bye our neigbour at Kerang used to run Leyland tractors in his hay and direct drilling contracting bussiness up until about 8 years ago kept them well maintained hardly ever let him down and he could fix almost anything himself with my gear I fix what ever has got to be down at the end of each season and my gear hardley ever fails but I never paint them as I cant paint to save my self seeya
