OK, Lang.
Think I got it now, 4 stroke=odd number cylinders
2 stroke can be either odd or even
What may have confused me was when we got into 28 and 56 cylinder engines (even numbers) but in reality were mutiple banks of SEVEN cylinder 4 strokes?
ALSO, early ROTARY engines, even if sleeve valve, still 4 strokes??
Thanks, Dave_64

Odd number of cylinders in a radial means in simple terms as pionted out easy to balance and nothing acting directly opposed

I have set up my Foden 2-stroke for display, and taken it most recently to the SCAATS event at the Museum of Fire at Penrith, NSW, where it was started frequently and drew people to its spectacular sound. The Gardner 6LX I also displayed was tame by comparison.
The Foden is a brand new engine, having never been used. Whilst it came out of a boat, the marine version differs only in having a water-cooled exhaust manifold, heat exchanger, and a Jabsco pump for secondary cooling water circulation.
It's a ripper of an engine! I will show it again at the Sydney Antique Machinery Club's 'Clarendon Classic' rally in September.
