I think I must be losing the plot!
Was there or was there not a bloke on here yesterday who was asking us to identify his ex-army Dodge?
I can not find any reference to his post or my reply saying I would investigate. Anyhow if you are out there somewhere Mike Cecil has replied to your query.
Hi Lang,
Why does Paul think it is a 3-ton vehicle when it has 1 ton on the plate?
The Dodge AT4 series was produced between 1962 and about 1971 as far as I
know, so any purchases by Army will be listed in the AWM126 registration
books, which are viewable on-line on the AWM website (they end in 1972 when
the new reg scheme came into existence). The Army operated many AT4-114, 1
ton trucks purchased from the mid-1960s onwards. These were either GS with a
rear canopy or with an ambulance body. If Paul starts in the region of ARN
180248 (the highest Aust Army AT4 that I know of) and works backwards, he
may come across his vehicle's chassis number amongst the AT4, 1 ton entries
- there are many stretching back to 1968 at least.
I have no record of 3-ton AT4 trucks in the Aust Army. Most 3-ton CL
vehicles were Ford. There were a few Dodge 3-ton AT4 used by the RAAF. I
have no records for Navy for that period - they used the Z plate system. It
is likely they also operated a few Dodge AT4 3-ton.
Regards
Mike

Thanks Lang
It is a 3 ton truck for sure but is also plated as 1 ton
It's a AT 4 329 and is Army green in lots of places
All most all if not all civilian vehicles that I know of are derated a lot for army use
So it isnt unlikely that a 3 ton truck is only rated at a ton
May not be army at all but it is army green underneath the bonnet and on the dash and has plates pop rivited to the dash that I have never seen on a Dodge dash before
Thats about all I know
Thanks for your help Lang

Apart from seeing the one tonners I personally have zero knowledge of those civilian Dodges in army service so can only be guided by Mike Cecil who as I said was for many years the vehicle curator of the Australian War Memorial.
For info of other forum members. If you have an ex-military vehicle you can find its history in service through those AWM records. They have hundreds of thousands of vehicles listed from before WW2 to the 70's on photocopies of the actual vehicle purchase, service and disposal record.

Just had a thought. I have changed those cabs (on Inters) in a single day by myself. Possibly the cab comes off another vehicle with all its plates etc attached.
Here is the only size Dodge I saw in the army. Normally had a high canvas canopy on the back. This one was used as a funeral car. AT4 114

Just like the Mack cabs getting sold at the moment, no doubt back in the day the army also sold Dodge truck cabs

Thats the type of plate it has on the dash, as I said "not a normal Dodge plate"
And I believe clearly not a 2 1/2 ton truck in civilian life, more like a 4 ton truck

That's not a Ford Cargo, that's a D series Ford. I don't no if the word cargo on the id plate just means load 2 1/2 ton. The Cargo superseded the D series. The Cargo wasn't too bad a truck until you tried to stop in a hurry.
