Hi all,
my late father in laws KH Bedford that has been transplanted at some stage early in its life with a Detroit. How do I identify what model/series the motor is. I believe he bought it from the Swan Hill area. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Tony.

If the plate is still there it should be on the side of the rocker cover

Its a 4/71 ,with the later alloy rocker cover and rubber gasket .......the number will be something like 4064-246810,stamped on the block in big (1") numbers just under the head facing .......since the block can be reversed ,the number can be left rear or right front..........as mentioned ,there should be a build strip in a holder on the rocker cover ........this assumes the engine originally had this cover ,and not the pressed steel one .

I think its pre early 70s ,as the air intake has GM Diesel on it ,later the motors were Detroit Diesel......... the changeover was 1971 ?.....but all the bits are easily swapped ,and there have always been plenty of parts around..........except good heads.

If the motor hasnt been run for a long time, take off the rocker cover and make sure the injectors and rack are free moving.......you should also be able to use the emergency shutoff if it runs away.......its a trigger on the blower intake housing ......also be sure its open and set before starting.

A Oberon mob had Bedford prime movers from new with GM's, I think they were V6's and they had a second bumper above the grill, I was only 10 or 12 years of age so late 60's, Dad use to say they would bring a new spare cab home every week on top of a load, They had a fair bit of death and destruction and when I drove for them 20 years later they still could not buy insurance and had to self-insure even workers comp was covered by their own insurance company which was as dodgy as all F___ when I ended up on compo it just came out of my holidays and sickies until that ran out then there was a drama every week to get a bit of money
