Interesting bit of history, Swish. The gas turbines are great for power output VS weight .. but then they found out that they sucked so much fuel, they made a big Yankee V12 gasser look positively economical.
Even in the days of cheap fuel, the fuel consumption of gas turbines was horrendous.

In an aeroplane, the dreadful fuel consumption is acceptable, when spread over 100 or 200 paying passengers .. but in a truck or tractor, the fuel consumption came back to haunt them every time.
As a result, the idea of gas turbines in trucks and tractors got abandoned pretty quickly.

That Chevy version looks like it would have sucked any stray wandering animals into the engine

Well, there ya go, Stu! Barrel along a nice Outback straight at night in ya Chevy gas turbine .. suck in the 'roos, instead of flattening them .. and spit 'em out the back .. all ready-minced, ready for ya 'rooburgers, at the next meal stop .. ;D ;D

It would be interesting to see if any of these prototype/evaluation vehicles survived.

Ron, the 'roos would probably go through ok, it's the wombats that might jam the impeller!

Stu - You've only got to worry about Wombats in a small section of S.A. .. and you could always fit a Wombat screen!! . . ;D

I'll wager all those rigs got crushed, just like so many experimental/prototype rigs. It's staggering, the waste in design and development depts.

That Ford with the doubles, looks horribly like a re-run of the Fowler Landliner, don't ya reckon?? The bloke driving it, must have felt like he was on the bridge of a ship! .. ;D

didnt the international 345 & 392 V8s match the fuel consumption of the gas turbines ?

Mate, even though the 345's and 392's sucked petrol like it was going out of fashion .. the gas turbines would bring a grin to an oil company mans face, that you couldn't wipe off, no matter what you told him.
Every story you read, with regard to gas turbine installation in road vehicles, ends with .. "the fuel consumption problems remained insurmountable". :'(

Probably also not big enough GCW highway vehicles back in those days.
Even Leyland's effort in the mid 70's had enormous stall torque, but it was only dragging around a loaded close bogey trailer as a test rig.
The economy figures might have looked better on a B triple or some mine truck application.
Watched the recent show on the Abram's M1 tank, it runs a 1500shp turbine.
The turbine blade damage from desert warfare demonstrated the other main flaw with gas turbines, huge air filters are needed.
