Oh so simple, follow the instructions, driving up and down the road, shifts in and out perfectly. But do exactly the same shift coming out of the grain terminal up a slight rise, past forty waiting trucks, every drivers ears tuned to listen to the engine note and gear changes of the passing trucks and that bloody two speed diff will emit the most awful sounds of gnashing teeth followed by a god almighty 'clunk!' as it finally decides to engage.

From then on, full gear changes are the go, until you get way down the road and practise changing that two speed diff again, perfect shifts everytime and wondering why the hell it didn't do it coming past the line up.

It was many years ago for me as well, Swishy, a young bloke full of excitement and like you say, hit the go pedal a little quick and all hell would break loose and it always seemed to happen when there was an audience. Mind you, I wasn't the only one.

The best 2 speed change I've come across was an R 200 inter I had, it was electric on the button, but, air operated on the #5 eaton.

Trust me

hi fellas
i drive a ford d series with a 2 speed eaton #4,every day.
it's got an electric speed changer on it.
it works perfectly 99 percent of the time.
only plays up if i try to change going uphill slowly around a tightish lefthand bend.
i reckon it's cause the planetry gearset is on the left, and when i turn left ,the lefthand hemisphere of the diff is going slow,so the planets dont get enough time to work, and also, theres probably a fair bit of gearlock in the diff when doing the turn.so i dont change the diff when turning.also i used to own a isuzu with a eaton #5 2 speed.
that had an air change on it,and it would gum up from time to time and once cleaned out she'd be a beauty again.
the d series ford realy needs the 2 speed diff cause it bloody gutless.

Guys

Just dip the clutch on the up changes - unload the drive weight. Gives the poor diff a chance. Lift the throttle, then lift the button (all sort of at the same time), dip the clutch, apply the power - all done fairly slowly.

Used to work every time for me!

Hey Oldfulla, you and me must have read the same book, eh.

Some one actually designed "the clutch", for a purpose, so why not use the bloody thing. It's allright to say you don't need it, then again, when the 2 speed $hits itself, the first thing the mechanic asks is--- did you always use the
???

One of the biggest problems I found with the old two speed electric diff changer gismo was the oil in the ol' two speed electric motor mechanism . The oil gets old , dirty and glunky - drain oil with new stuff which will most likely be a lot thinner and hey presto , motor changes twice as quick . Also after all these years the ol' electric wiring may leave a lot to be desired . Hook in a couple of relays and some new copper - it all must help . cheers Clarke . ;)
