Early Kenworths was created by GM Diesel
Swishy or anyone else that may know.
There are lots of questions below that Im having trouble getting sensible answers to. Curiosity more than anything has got me interested in finding out the answers.
What are the differences between the early 60

U cum to the right place for nonsensible A:

the KW 'S' model had much the same cab as the 'W' model n the hoods were differnet in shape
the early cabs most noticable by the large 1/4 vent window






n also the full length piano type hinge on doors me thinks they were refered to as the "Seattle cab"
wide radiator grills ment a biggr radiator
different length hoods 'X' tended for biggr donks like the V12-71 GM
Yes Kenworth were custom bilt

There is a great story written by Des Judd in the HCVC yearbook about one of these jiggers. He was an apprenctice Motor mechanic back in 1965 when he got a ride to Gundagai and back in an Ansett overnighter. Des obviously remembers the trip like yesterday and his little yarn is recommended reading for KW fans.

Thanks for the reply.
I printed off ya picture and went and compared it to one my Kansas doors and yes the 1/4 window is different but the most obvious differance is the door is a different shape. Are your S doors aliminium or steel ?
I noticed the pressed ribs in the door on your picture also.
Next stupid question..Is the S cab steel or the riveted ali / fiberglass lid setup like the later Seattle cabs ?

me thinks they B steel frame with aluminium pop riveted on to steel door frame
Could/would the inside door hardware l@@k like this

steel frame with aluminium pop rivited to steel cab frame but roof is tin cos they can rust out in the rear cnrs

the front tilt hood/bonnet is fibre glass
they call a uniglass hood

ifn its an old truck it could have a later cab stuk on it
ifn U dont think they B rivits they may B Huck Bolt/Fastners

Excellent thingy's them, the first Leader that Brumbles got was twin chassis rails held together with bolts and tensioned up tight, that first prime mover, went empty over the weigh-bridge at 16 ton, bloody heavy to be precise. Back to the depot and start to strip of the winch, headache rack and everything else that could be unbolted, including removing the extra fuel tanks, chain tray and side locker, everything that could be removed was, just enough fuel left in the tank to get around to the bridge and back home. So back around to the weigh-bridge and this time it tared out at about 12.5 ton. Still heavy, but better than the first time over that bridge.

This weighty problem was relayed to Cyril Anderson and he was told to remove some of that extra weight on the next horse.

Now the second one was being put together out at Rocklea by the fellas at Leader, and I happened to get a lift home with Eric Collier, the yard supervisor at Hendra. He had to go out and inspect what Cyril was up to on that second horse.
When we got there he started to tell Eric about these new fangled rivets for holding a twin chassis together that he had just got hold of. To prove how good these were, he put in a bolt and nut and proceeded to tighten this bolt with a bloody big 10 foot cheater bar, four blokes swung on it to get the tension they required, then in the holes each side of this nut and bolt, he stuck in these huck-bolts and tightened them up with this two man thingy that looked like a bleedin' big rattle gun, but operated with hydraulic pressure. As the first huck-bolt was tightened, pressure was applied to the long bit stickin' out and it just shattered that long end and it went of like a shot from a cannon. Now the the two blokes hanging onto this hydraulic jigger had to fight to just hang onto this contraption. Then the second one was tensioned followed by this cannon noise, then the blokes doing this dance across the floor again. This hydraulic contraption was actually suspended from a chain attached to one of the rafters in the building, it was that heavy.

Cyril just walked up to the chassis rails then and undid that single tensioned bolt by hand.

You could have heard a pin drop when he did that, totally unbelievable.

Always reckoned if one of them huck-bolts ever gave way, then all the rest of 'em along that chassis rail would give way as well. Cyril recommended NOT to be standing near it, if that ever happened.

Now those trucks would have to be getting on toward being 30 year old and as far as I know, those twin chassis rails are still in one bit.
