Detective,

I think you have hit the nail on the head with the dragline mobility problem for everyday use. For longer term operations they are still unbeatable and even 60 year old light drag lines can reach two or three times as far as any normal excavator and of course can dig a dam 60 feet deep while standing back on the bank on hard ground without risking bogging like an excavator.

They are certainly not outmoded when you think that 20% of the Australian economy is derived from draglines.

we got excavators, face shovels and wheel loaders at work, all have there goods and bads for each job, no need for a drag line though
