Just as an aside, couple of blokes from around Liverpool NSW, had a couple of V8 air cooled Deutz's, square looking models, did a bit of subbying for Vaughn Trpt, (who didn't?), early 70's. One had the original ZF box, other had a 10 speed o/d Bushranger box. Both seen many times on side of road with the bonnets up in the air! Yet bloke out Wilberforce way, single drive, used to pull a bogie cattle crate got an unbelievable run out of his, told me one day up at the old Wooden Spoon on the Putty, that he used to leave his ticking over while he had brekky. He reckoned thats why Ansett got such a good run out of them, trucks were turned around all the time, never got time to go cold. May have been something in that.

It most certainly was Magirus Deutz
Magirus was the name of the truck company and Deutz made the motors
So it would be like having a Kenworth Cummins as a brand
From what I understand Australia was the only country to call the a Deutz truck and Magirus wasn't mentioned

Paul, if my memory serves me correctly, on the grille of the flat fronted conventional cab ones at Ansett, underneath the big spired M was the words Magirus Deutz. BIDSTBC it was a long time ago.

Im thinking that is probably correct
The big spired M is to represent the church spire at Ulm were they were made
All in all a very classy truck

Alan Nutt had a small Deutz four cylinder in a Valiant years ago.....I bought a single drive Jupiter off him and turned it into a bogie drive with a small Eaton bogie from a Ford.......young guy bought it ,and was towing a float with it,which was a bit much ,I thought ....Didnt see it for a couple of years ,then someone told me the truck had run into the back of a car at the K Mart corner at Sunnybank ,killed four people......I did a lot of work on Deutz motors in compressors, right up till I quit the sandblasters ......there is a Deutz 913 motor in the roller out the back......Very costly for parts......you have to buy a liner kit to get piston rings ,all the weird headstuds break off in the block and have to be drilled out .........not my favourite motor.

I think the M thing in the badge is supposed to represent a V2 Rocket........Got the book here somewhere .......the company name is Klockner Humboldt Deutz......the Magirus name comes from the 1930 s when the title was Motoren Fabrik Deutz von A V Magirus......as mentioned the trucks were called Magirus.
