AWC number plate was created by mikeg
When I was in the Territory in the 70s exploring WW11 airfields I found a number of abandoned Lend Lease vehicles left there after the war one truck in particular I found interesting as it had 2 sets of number plates front and rear on it.

The first number plate was stamped AMF on the top with numbers under which stood for Australian Military Forces

The second one was stamped AWC down the side with numbers along side. This plate had me puzzled for quite some time until I found the answer.

I know the answer but does anyone else know?

Allied Works Council it was. Apparently they were in fact illegal plates made by order of the Officer in charge of the roadworks who was sick and tired of his vehicles being stopped at road blocks so had them made to differentiate the road work vehicle from ordinary convoys. He was told to remove them by the powers that be but he persisted and it was agreed that both AMF and AWC plates were to be displayed on all roadworks vehicles.
