those A frames are called arches I rekon they all would've been gone by the 70's when the timber jacks came out and they were realy loud out there in the bush had a 453 GM hear them hills away unlike a dozer timber jacks had arch built into back of them . still do cable logging in Otways and in Gippsland not many big sticks left now

we visited this area a few months ago on our ATVs and there are trees for as far as you can see when viewed from the mountain. The old logged areas have been reharvested and regrown and other huge areas are still natural.Dont be fooled by the treehuggers and treesitters in believing that it is all clearfelled and burnt.

nuff political dribble ;)
here are some old workshop pics

There is a good book, even though its American, called "Endless Tracks in the Forest"

Traces lots of logging on east and west coast of the states. Lots of cool pictures but all black and white. Shows some real big gear, cable logging, dozers, steam donkey winches etc etc.

One image springs to mind, a huge wheeled logging arch, wheels about 10ft diameter, with a T or an A model driving through underneath!
other stuff like specially made ice roads, massive water flumes and trestle bridges.
A few big logs they couldnt handle they used to split down with dynamite to manageable chunks.

I'll try posting some scans if their is any interest shown.

So true, I look around here and see paddocks that Dad and I fell and carted timber from 50 years ago, and the "too small" trees that we bypassed are now millable timber.

Trust me
