Mount Lyell Mine.

A few photos of trucks at the Mount Lyell Mine in Tasmania. These DG series Fodens must have worked bloody hard and I guess with 102 horsepower Gardner 6LWs they would have been pretty underpowered for the size of the dump trailers. They were described as 20 ton trailers, but I guess you could load a lot more than 20 tons on them. Notice the big reduction hubs on the Foden worm diffs, I suppose this was one reason they chose Fodens, that would be a pretty strong backend. Does anybody else have information on this mine?

My great grandfather's company (Lahey Brothers & Nicklin) bought a Shay loco off them around 1900 to use on their logging railway at Canungra Qld.



Edit.. Just checked, this Shay loco came from the North Mt Lyell mine.

This would have been nasty, a trailer has gone over while tipping. I don't know how the driver would have fared, the cab on the driver's side is pretty munted. Doesn't look good. Looks like that big ram has taken out the cab.
