I know many of you are interested in thing other than trucks (some times!)

I have been following via the internet a group of people that were attempting to break the world speed record for a steam car.

Well going by reports they did this on the 26th August 2009 at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The average speed over the measured kilometer was 148.308mph (238.678 kph) ! The top speed reached was over 155mph (over 250kph)!

There is a website with some video of the run goto www.steamcar.net/lsr-diary-1.html .

But just some extra info taken from this website about the car:-

The British Steam Car takes 2.5 miles to accelerate and after the measured km, a further 2.5 miles to decelerate

Oh I forgot to mention The previous official record was 127mph (204kph) set in 1906 by Fred Marriott, driving a Stanley steamer!

So the British team may also have the record for breaking the longest standing land speed record! As it is over 100 years between them!

Given aircraft carriers, those with catapults anyway, still use steam to launch their aircraft, I'm not surprised at all.
