I actually thought that Melways was defunct, gone the way of kodak cameras and stuff like that. but lo, the other day in a roadhouse, here's not just the Melways, but the Sydways too! You wonder who actually buys them- Surely Swishy can't buy that many of them to keep them afloat? Then again, as a transport magnate, he does have a bloody big fleet, so maybe...

I used to have a full set of UBD (Refidex for Queenslanders), Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne Adelaide and each state with major respective towns.
Should have seen the bewildered looks on Melbournians dials, looking at a UBD. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

I've got a Milkcrate full of Street Directories, Road Atlas's & Maps.. !
I still annoy My Wife whenever We're going somewhere I haven't been to. By Looking It up the old fashioned Way.. Whereas She's happy to punch it into Her Phone & Fly Blind..

Universal Business Directories (UBD) bought their Brisbane opposition, Gregorys*. UBD was subsequently bought by the Dutch, global mapping company Hema.

*Who remembers Gregorys map books? They weren't as accurate or easy to use as a Refidex, but fitted better into a glove box.

The cover of the current street directory has UBD-Gregorys on it. See my link above.

I still use a UBD/Gregory's Adelaide street directory. It's all that i use. A lot of people laugh at me, but it works, and i know how to use it. In fact a new/latest edition is on my shopping list week.

V8 HEMA Australia maps has nothing to do with the big Dutch shopping chain HEMA.

Henry Boegheim laminated his first marine chart in 1990 in the garage of his suburban home in Brisbane which he and his wife Margaret would soon take to market at scale. Little did Henry and Margaret (HE - MA) know at that point the impact that the Hema business was about to have on regional Australia.

UBD has nothing to do with HEMA Australia it is owned by Hardie-Grant Publishing. They are Australia's biggest guide and map publisher. They also publish for Berlitz, Insight Guides, Michelin and Marco Polo. most of whom are direct competitors for products in the HEMA Australia range.

I didn't know there was a shopping chain called Hema.
I'll never trust a magazine article again, seemingly they're no more reliable than the internet.
