ABS in the dirt/mud in trucks

I think you will find that the brakes will still work if there is a problem with the ABS.
All that happens when there is a cut wire or a crook sensor is the light comes up on the dash and the ABS won't/can't function.

Don't know about EBS though, none of my blokes has damaged any EBS wiring as yet, and I hope they don't.

As electronic components get some age, problems often arise.
Manufacturers outsource component supply and there will always be some shonky looking for a quick $$.
I'd guess we've all had a perfectly good electrical item fail due to a 10c capacitor, I know I've had more computer power supplies fail than I can remember.
A quick Google of Capacitor plague will give the reason.
I wonder what the next "plague" electronic item will be.

One thing I should have added.

The Engineer advised me they system stores information for hundreds of hours of vehicle use and a fleet manager can see how hard the driver is on brakes and forensically tell if the EBS was disconnected/disarmed/immobilised and if the brakes were applied before an accident.

So there's a degree of Big Brother in that black box (and it literally is a black box) as well.

Yep Cam that's is correct and as BPW,s guru's have told me EBS is the same if a sensor fails or power is cut etc the system goes back to being dumb so there are no issues about being stuck on the side of the road.

And Zuffen I'm almost certain that trailers only need ABS and auto slack adjusters from 1/07/14 with some exceptions for trailers with a high tare mass per axle (I think 2.5t) and some others like dolly's and other specialist trailers with EBS I think due to be mandatory around 2016?
Most people are however recommending to go straight to EBS for all the added benefits like roll stability programs etc.

Debo,

We were advised the same that the trailer will revert to dumb brakes if there's a failure.

Apparently the commonest failure is a reluctor sensor moving out of range.

Fix is remove brake drum and push sensor in as far as it will go. The reluctor ring will push it back tot he correct spot.

We figured you could remove a backing plate and push the sensor back in with a short stick. Sounds much easier.

This is a new trailer, yet to be registered so it is post 1/7/14 so EBS it is.

We figured if this was fitted by a trailer company it would cost you around $10,000.00 as labour would push the initial costs up significantly.

Debo, come the 1/1/15 all new trailers will need to have ABS, from I think the 1/7/14 any variation needed to have ABS. To clarify that, if I change one of my Trailer designs by changing any component, a variation has to be put into DOTARS (Canberra).

Zuffen, I think $10,000 to fit EBS sounds a bit out there, but I haven't had to fit one as yet. We looked into doing it for a customer about 6 months ago and there wasn't a lot of information readily available, but I would have guessed the figure at being a lot less than that (if we could have got a bit more info on the programming).

Cam

Is there a weight limit that this kicks in at or is it for all trailers.

The basic unit was around $4,000 plus cables (at around $50.00 per metre) and plugs at $100.00 each.

Material wise I guess Stu has around $6,000.00 in the system.

Labour to fit it would be 40 man hours @$100.00 so $4,000.00.

An experienced fitter would get that down to 25 hours but by the time a mark-up was added to the materials side you'd go back to around $9-10,000.00.

Funny thing is the cable they supply only comes in 1 length and that's to fit wind generator trailers.

We cut our's and removed around 12 metres of cable.

Well Zuffen when you put it like that I'd have to agree, LOL. As I said, we haven't had to fit one as yet.
Trev, I only know about the full compliance Heavy Trailers, and then only what our engineer tells us.
