BHP tried a similar thing at Port Kembla steelworks
It was a big rubber tyred thing when Pacific National took over the rail. It was called a Trucktor. we watched it trying to push a couple of empty ladles just jumping up and down on the spot spitting rocks out every where. It soon got the flick...

I once worked on a cab over Kenworth set up to pull ballast cars for track work. Nowhere near as fancy as this, just the westinghouse brake system, a ballast box over super singles on the drive and Hi-Rail gear. Apparently they decommissioned it after a runaway and Stanton Hire in Sydney got hold of it to convert to a water cart to use on track works, which is where I came in. Never got finished and I don't know what happened to it in the end.

The Kenworth you describe sounds like one that is being used on the rail electrification project in Adelaide.

It was an old bugger- k125 ish, tipper wheelbase, I think Cummins and Road Ranger. It had all the extra air tanks for the train brakes mounted on the air cleaner gantry behind the cab, and a heap of old railway line stacked up and welded together for the counterweight.
It was probably 2006 or so that I worked on it and I didn't take any photos, so the memory is getting a workout.
