She's a ripper alright, that ole gal. It's a pity he never said what powers it? She's pretty straight, a coat of paint would make her look a million $$'s.

Sme again
LOL

it could/would dig a dam
it has more digging power than a similar sized Hyd machine
They B a dyin race of operators for m
After the steam engine they B it
LOL
to dig a dam (depending on size) U may have to duble, triple handle or more, the material dug out to move the material
A dragline is better cos of the reach the bucket can B cast
also dragline B the machine to clean out xistin dams th@ still have water in m

To use, operate n adjust the Ol rope machines
U Really need to count all fingers B 4 n after
jist to make shore they all B still their

Also creature comforts = zero
compared to a modern Hyd Xcav8R

LOL

The old NCK wouldn't be a vast amount of use for dam digging, because of the lack of reach .. in fact, no matter how she was set up, she's still limited.
What she's currently set up for, is either trenching .. or digging out a face below the digger, whilst she's standing on the bench above. You'd set her up on the bench, with just enough reach to get over the edge, and pull the dirt from the bottom and the vertical face .. then lift the loaded bucket up over the bench .. swing around and dump in a wagon or truck behind or alongside you (preferably alongside, because that's the fastest technique - less swing involved).

A better digging setup would be a face shovel for her .. and work from the level below the face, biting into the face, and then swinging to load trucks or wagons. Unfortunately, that boom is strictly a backhoe boom .. you can't turn it around .. you'd need a dedicated face shovel boom and a bucket with an opening floor for her.

The problem with digging a dam with her, is that you'd need trucks or wagons to do it. Shovels have no ability to place dirt at a distance, they are only good for loading or placing dirt from in front, to behind the shovel. Working a shovel on a dam, you'd be double shifting the dirt all the time .. an expensive and time wasting process. A dozer is cheaper, faster, more cost-efficient, and is unlimited in how far you can move the dirt in one go.

thanks for all the input guys . . i wonder if she has as much "force" as a hydrolic excavator .. i dug a decent size dam back in the 90s with a old JCB backhoe .the dozer i had at the time a cable blade international TD18a was more suited to pushing rather than digging (due in part to the cable blade/lack of rear rippers & a blunt cutting edge lol

Depending on how hard the ground was ,if you had back up rippers fitted to the cable blade on the TD18 ,you may have been sirprised what you could have done .The ripper tines pivot on a pin at the top of the tine and when you back up after a push the tines loosen the ground and you had to back up anyway. ian.
