Canal Boat

Not sure if this has been posted before.
1 of the English canal boats, fitted with a Lister JP2 engine.
Boat dates back to the 30's

The Handbrake decided that we should take a cruise on one of these.
This one goes through the middle of London Zoo. Pretty interesting trip.
Boat is 110 years old, riveted steel hull and originally drawn by horse, converted to engine at some time.
70ft long narrow boat used to haul just about anything. The boatman and his family lived full time onboard, very cramped even for 1 person let alone a family
This bridge was destroyed when a boat full of gunpowder exploded under it, rebuilt in a month, mid 1800's. They would not even get plans done in a month now.

Hayseed thanks for fixing the pic's, dunno how I cocked it up this time.
The boatmen had it hard, this little trip took us through a tunnel. Tunnels did not have a towpath for the horse so the boats were moved through them by manpower. One way we were told of was a couple of men on the laying roof of the boat and using their legs to "walk" the tunnel.
The tunnel we went through was only 245 metres long and too narrow for boats to pass so the first 1 to the tunnel had right of way. Was constructed 200 years ago.
The longest tunnel in the UK is 5000 metres, a long way to manpower a boat

Have to admit I'm a little envious , I've always (for some reason) wanted to have a ride on 1 of those Canal Boats..

Just love this thread. Years ago, I was going to buy one of these narrow boats (don't call them 'barges') to live on permanently. The girl who I was romancing at the time was all for it as well. Sadly, the romance didn't last.
In my home library, I have nine canal narrow boat books. The best without doubt would be "Narrow Boat" by LTC Rolt. Written just before WW Two, it is really still current in this day and age.
Blackduck59. If you're still in the area, there is a real beut canal museum via the 'York Way' beside Kings Cross railway station. As they say, if you need directions 'ask a policeman'

Its hard to believe that when the canal system was built it was the latest in transport technology no sooner were they built than they were out of date the train was invented so that train lines all over the place no sooner had they done that and some fool invented the truck
I wonder whats around the corner for the truck ?????

todays useless information has anyone ever heard of the "navies" on the track crews that repair and maintain the train lines ??? The term navi is short for navigator which was the term given to the men who dug the canals all those years ago I think from memory they had to be able to dig and load 5 ton of dirt every day, bet there was no fat people back then

I find this stuff although not truck related all very interesting

Doubt there is much free in it,
The 1 in the first pic is a wooden hull, the gent working on it said it cost around 10,000 Pound a year to maintain.
Not sure on charges for tying up a public points but there are time limits as to how long you can stay at them. A lot of Boaters have permanent leased/licenced moorings and nobody else can use them. Guess there has to be fees for that.
