NEW bomb robots capable of deploying drills, grinders and x-ray equipment have been unveiled by Victoria Police.
The $1.7 million units, one large and one medium size, replace models after more than a decade.
The move comes as part of the State Government’s Public Safety plan.
Constructed by Australian security company XTEK Limited, the next-generation models are at the forefront of security and protection technology.
“The two new robots have been carefully selected and will provide a significant improvement to Victoria Police’s capabilities,” Acting Superintendent Glenn Owen said.
“These robots are a vital tool for bomb technicians to utilise at most bomb response tasks.”
The larger robot, named ‘TEODOR’ was deployed last week during a bomb scare on Russell Street after police received reports of a suspicious package.
“The large robot was deployed to conduct an assessment of the item and was able to ensure the area was made safe for both the community and police attending the scene,” Acting Supt. Owen said.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Amelia Penhall said the TEODOR is capable of deploying a wide range of tools including drills, grinders and x-ray equipment.
Ms Penhall also said the smaller robot, named ‘TELEMAX’, is designed to deal with explosives on public transport.
Contracts were signed last year with XTEK Limited after a new small robot, the Dragon Runner, became operational in May last year.
