I'm with Pat,it looks like a boat motor to me. They normally put the flywheel at the other end in a boat to get the prop shaft angle as shallow as possible.

I don't suppose anyone was any Price's Motorine Deluxe lying around in the back shed?

Pat and Cam are spot on. It's an Atlantic Marine engine. Unfortunately, there were three other Atlantic Engine companies in the U.S., as well as the Scottish one .. and one of the U.S. Atlantic Engine Co's built primarily marine engines as well. The Scottish Altlantic company appears to have totally vanished .. but here's a couple of pics from a British museum that had an identical engine, and they were having a head scratch with it, too .. :)
