how much to fix a GM 6V53 ?? was created by 700GMRR
ok maybe I am getting cold feet about selling my dodges, and viewing V8 inters dodge I am already having detroit withdrawal symptoms, anxiety, sense of worthlessness etc..
so i went and started up the red dodge and it still runs alright with no load so was wondering how much it would cost to get new pistons and rings put in if that is what you do or is its problem, (aparently the heads were done up before I bought it)
currently it is down on power and makes a noise a full revs (in the green zone) and is spitting oil out the overflow
unfortunately being a builder and not a mechanic and having buggger all spare time I need someone to do it?
any leads on a mobile detroit mechanic in Perth?? or appoximate costs would be appreciated

Paying someone to do it will cost some dollars mate, though if you are handy with the spanners there are only a couple of tricky bits. I got a Detroit specialist (CPF Detroit) to swap the pistons on the conrods and load the pistons into the liners, I also got the same bloke to set the governor gap, racks and start it up for me. The pistons go into the liners then the whole assembly gets dropped into the engine, the pistons have to go into the bottom of the liners not the top like most everything else and there is a special tool for the welsh plugs on the pistons. So maybe ask someone who specializes in 2 stroke Detroits to give you a quote to do these jobs.
I paid about $1,500 for the kit in mine off Macquarrie's but Cutting Edges sell them too, and that was about 3 years ago. Setting the valves and injectors is a piece of pie, though you do need a tool for the injectors which is about $40. Macquarrie or Cutting Edges may also be able to put you onto someone who specializes in working on them too.
With the front clip off they are easy enough to work on.
Don't get worried about a bit of oil coming out of your motor as it is Mate, even when they have been done up oil runs out of them, and they are not a power house, keep in mind they are only 195-210 HP, so your motor may not be as bad as it seems.

thanks Big Cam,
yes she definately leaked but this last trip it got rid of a couple of litres in 200 + km then the funny noise appeared right at the end of the trip. the power thing is a seat of the pants feeling but it definately started to feel like it was struggling on some hills that the white one would go over in 9 or 10 th
$1500 for a kit sounds good, getting the front clip off I could do, just a bit more nervous pulling the GM apart

Might also be the tune too Mate.
One of mine was blowing more coal out of one chimbley than the other and I got my mate to put an exchange set of injectors in it and a bit of tune, made a huge difference.
Oil still drips out the air box drains though, and it uses oil, they all do, it is the nature of the beast. The less work they do, the more oil they get through.

Looks like you might have a plan there mate.
Worse comes to worse I've got a 6V53 here that is Dodge spec and a good runner, but if I were you I'd fix what you have. It takes nearly as long to get the front on and off as it does to put the kit in the motor.

Well we went and had a look see in this little Detroit yesterday
Pulled the air box covers off, was no broken rings in there but was very dirty and gritty. Feeling up into the cylinder ports with my fingers the pistons feel scored.
The thing is it starts up cold no worries so the comp can't be to bad.
We pulled off the passenger side exhaust manifold to get to that side air box covers, the front exhaust port was very oily compared to the others on that side. She blows some oil out the manifold to exhaust join here and drips all over the show.
Going for a spin round the block i looked at the exhaust and its black while under throttle but then blue when just at steady rpm. Also did a slow speed pull up a hill in top gear to load the old girl up and was more blue than black When first started its a bit smoky but once warmed up clears a lot but not to nothing.
Also at idle with hand over exhaust flow output there is a noticeable like miss. I feel this could be the front passenger side cylinders lower comp/sad rings.
I don't think there is anything wrong with it just tired and been around for a while and needs some love.
we planning on just doing a tune on it and setting the injectors and some new filters.
Any tricks to setting the injectors, see we need a tool to do this. Do we need to know what injectors are in there?
