The motors were not made in Brazil, but large castings such as blocks and heads were cast in Brazil, and then the castings sent to the U.S. for machining and assembly.

It's common for all the major manufacturers (Caterpillar included) to use subcontractors for component manufacture.

In relation to castings, the city of Joinville in Santa Catarina State, in Brazil is known as the "Brazilian Manchester", because of its huge foundry industry.
The Brazilians in Joinville are noted for their industrialisation, technical excellence .. and low labour costs, assisted by Govt subsidies.

There were a large number of European immigrants to Brazil (Norwegian, Swiss, Italian, Portuguese & German - but overwhelmingly German), who took steel and iron working knowledge, and business knowledge, to Brazil in the mid-1800's and early-1900's.
These people established the likes of the foundry industry in Joinville, Santa Catarina.

Thus, iron foundries such as Tupy SA of Joinville can cast blocks and heads, and ship them to the U.S., far cheaper than an American company can cast them in the U.S.

This "modus operandi" remains in operation today, with crankshafts for Navistar 466's being rough forged by Sumitomo of Japan, and sent to the U.S. for finish machining and assembly .. and the conrods are forged-steel, fractured-cap units manufactured by Albon Engineering in the United Kingdom.

The reason we know little about Brazilian industry is because of the language barrier. If you could speak and write Brazilian Portuguese, you would find that Brazil has a massive industrial base, and manufactures vast amounts of everything from cars and trucks, right through to aircraft.
Embraer of Brazil is the worlds 4th largest aircraft manufacturer, and the Embraer aeroplanes are highly regarded.
Tupy SA of Brazil have also cast huge numbers of Cummins blocks. Tupy are amongst the top five largest foundries in the world.
