I think we sell FIAT a bit short.

Ever since day one they have been masters in getting power out of small engines (they also built some of the biggest engines in the world). As John mentioned they have always been one of the biggest diesel engine manufacturers (many FIAT engines have been built under licence elsewhere).

The mechanical technology and sophistication has always been far ahead of most other manufacturers particularly UK and USA. Their cars have been in the main fairly basic in their body construction built for mass market anf fairly plain - oops forgot Alfa, Masarati, Arbath and Ferrari.

In Australia they have always been let down by their service, parts and sales networks which have never been good. Pre-1925 they were one of the biggest truck sellers in Australia.

I find it hard to write off a company that after 130 years in business is now one of the biggest in the world quite apart from their giant subsidiaries IVECO and FIAT Chrysler. They make trains, ships, planes, earthmoving and farm machinery to name a few. You don't stay in business that long if you are not meeting the market.

Southbound, when you photographed that Fiat, you were two left turns away from a great collection of (mostly unrestored) trucks and restored MG's, Morrises and a Wolseley, plus talking to a couple of enthusiasts while sitting and having coffee or tea.

Next time you are heading down that way, PM me for the address. Anyone else coming near Phillip Island is welcome also.

Thank you for the invite Morris, the next time I'm down there I will call and say G'day.

I'd rather have tools that I don't need, than not have the tools I do need.

FIAT own CNH and CNH own IVECO. It certainly is a huge industrial octopus

You have got to be fair to them. The 580K was last built about 30 years ago. You can not expect companies to carry full parts stocks forever. Most car companies would roll their eyes if you wanted a good parts supply for 30 year old models.

Just my opinion but I don't think it unreasonable to have to source bits for vehicles and machinery of that age from wreckers or after-market suppliers.
