Yep a NP 540 is what I believe I require. It's for an AT4-690 1968 model. Any clues on the one closer to Telarah? I have just rebuilt the 318 but the box is leaking oil at the input shaft and I now need to fix that. Can a DIY bloke like myself replace the leaking seal or is it a job for the spurts?

depends how good you are with gearboxes its not a massive job to change the front seal ..but prob best to pull the box urself then get a friendly mechanic to change the seal for you shouldnt be to expensive .. the boxes r old now so any 2nd hand ones will give you minor problems ... is the 318 you have a poly (bolts going through the tappet covers )or a la (bolts go around the tappet covers)
cheers ken

So I take it that the box doesn't have to be totally diasassembled to replace the input seal. The gears and shafts can remain in place.
The motor is definately not a Poly. I know this by the valve arrangement. I think it's an LA as the engine number is A221J02953. Could be a valiant motor as it was a Repco exchange when a previous owner cooked the original. This one supposedly had only done 16K yet had 2 bent push rods, 1.5 thou wear on the crank, 7 thou wear on bores, cam lobes beginning to crack and valve guides were cactus. Seems like a set of rings and bearings maketh a recoed exchange engine.

definatly sounds like a car 318 ..all la 318s fitted to the 600 series of trucks were the heavy duty 318-3 they hardly wear out ! . . ive had a few dodge 600s in my days ..one was retrofitted with a car 318 when i pulled that motor down it had more wear in the bore than a female porn star . . its been a while i dont think the box needs to be totally pulled down .. all the best with your project the dodge 600s were probably the pick of the bunch a good 318-3 goes a LOT better than the 361 V8 in the 700 series
cheers ken
