Hey, what happened to the picture of the Commer with the logs? They were a good old truck, those 4 wheel drive Commer's were great in the sand, my bro' and I drove them at Woomera for retrieving rockets, powered by the Humber snipe "chrome bore" engine, had the mesh in the bonnet for extra cooling, they were popular with the Military, have no pictures as camera's were banned on the range, I guess the guy got tired of trying to crank it with the handle, went for a beer and never came back, don't see those crankhandles much anymore.

looking desperately for something to read, I turned to a book one of my daughters gave me, "best Australian trucking stories" by Liz Martin and her mate, hoping I might find a nugget of a yarn there besides all the old rehashed stories of the Goverment road train or Rotinoff's, stories beaten to death, most of us have towed or given assistance to families stranded on the road due to their inexperience with long distance travel. It painted truck drivers in a poor light and the public reading it (if anyone did) would have a dim view of truckies, like the poor old farmer in the book, on his hands and knee's begging for a tow with his family to the next town, offering bribes to the "Hero" who reluctantly hooked them up and took of down the road a full belt just about causing the poor old guy a heart attack. When carting hogsheads of wine from the Berri distillery to Hay I towed a family and their car right across the hay plains to the edge of town at about 25 mph to allow them control and comfort, and I asked THEM if they wanted a tow, (see picture) messed up there! Another tragic story of a driver who rolled his truck killing a child and ruining a womans life, all because he was worried about some fool in a car having enough room to pass, ignoring the safety of other people, the book should be called "The saddest Australian truck stories" as it casts a poor light on the hundreds of truckies who every day help someone in need, doing good deeds, of course this doesn't sell like the negative stuff. I can't count the number of cars with caravans I have pulled out of creekbeds when I was running the South road from Alice, of course there was a bit of self interest there as I couldn't cross when they were stuck there!! Now they are talking about another book, PLEASE, enough damage done. >

Although it has often been regfered to as a boat anchor, I found the little diesel to do a great job for it's size, I traded my Inter KB8 in on a late model Inter R180 fitted with this engine, it regularly pulled a 15 ton payload getting around 10 mpg as against the Red diamond 4 mpg, hauling spuds out of Brisbane to dragging three 5 ton coils of steel out of Pt Kembla up to the Hume, flat as a strap with a 2 foot red flame out the pipe in bog cog. The drive train was too light so became an expert on repairing gearboxes and diffs, grinding a ring around the outer ends of the axles to make it easier to change as they snapped at that point. The troubles I had with the engine were no fault of it's own, I had rigged up an oil gauge from the engine instead of the electric unit. At night the small pipe broke due to vibrations and being tired didn't notice and it spat the oil out until I heard the knocking. Called a friend who had a repair garage on the hume with a White tow truck and he towed me in, did a lot of work for trucks on the Hume at that time, 1962, lapped the shaft with a new bearing and I was off!, 300 mile south of Alice the injector pump locked up due to trash in the drums I carried for extra fuel, fortunately right at a bore!
Had a mate in Alice send me out a new injector pump and filters and off I go, about 100 miles out of alice the engine started knocking again, had a new set of shells sent out and off, at Elliot same ole, same ole, dropped the sump and amongst the dust repaired it, there was a Works and Jerks garage there where I was able to get some varius thickness shims and with a used bearing from the last lot I shimmed it up filing the edges down and continued, got to Darwin and unloaded (never got paid!!) stayed with old mate Ted stiles and His wife, Gay Black, and no, she was a white girl! now there was a 8-)piece of work, swear like a trooper, did some work for him, then another old mate Jimmy Burnett loaded me up with scrap metal for Adelaide, got there and picked up a load for Sydney and sold the truck to a dealer who was nearly arrested when he went through Marulin as my name was still on the door, the old Perkins still running fine, I was sold on them after that!!

hey Pat, really interesting pictures of your clutch battle to study, what a job!!
I left a Holden in Cairns for 4 months and to free the clutch had to start in gear and keep holding the clutch driving along pumping the gas pedal, finaly freed but lucky. The 2 inters I had wer when I bought 5 acres in virginia U.S. and built a house and BIG shed on 5 acres (hecktorpasquels?) The yeller one is an R200 I saw at a junk yard whilst out driving with my wife, did a Uee and the man said $1,000, had 11,000 miles on it, used by the federal Gov to spread salt on the patrick-henry airfield, never been on the highway, told my wife to drive the car home, she was thrilled!!!! never missed a beat on the way home. The red one was a 1967 190 I bought for $600 with a blown headgasket, man had put a new radiator in it, didn't solve the promlem so was over it, candy apple red, saw a KB7 at a show, had the red diamond with twin carbs and full air, bit different to the ones we had, must habve made your day finding this one, look forward to more pic's as you progress, printed the pic of you in the Tshirt, no IHI? hope thats ok. Ron.
