Jeffo
Great old pics. What an era, and what a generation.
Great old kit too.
Don't make people like that anymore, but probably good they don't make a lot of machinery like that too. Good to look back though
:) :) :) :) :) :)

Jeffo, as everyone else has said, great Photos' & story..

A bit of a dumb question :D

Those Sugar bins with the flat bottom, & the side tipper doors,
I'm assuming there was a crane/gantry at the Mill to lift one side up???

don't matter." -

Jeffo the sons name is Greg and I did work with him in 1990's he was based at C & D Albion mainly but came to C & D Rocklea for a while.
Great piece of historical info there and when I saw Quinces name, I immediately thought of him.

Here is another piece of history that belongs with Gregs (Jeffo) fathers/family trucking history.

The 2 Leyland Beavers that appear in the above collection of sugar carters - came from this fleet when they were traded on 4 new B Model Macks in mid 1966.

In those days the Port unloading facility had overhead cranes that lifted the bins to tip. The truck was held down of course and the bin door opened once the latches released.Often an overnight load would allow the sugar to set and it just hung there with the bin fully tipped.
Alec Christoffle would poke away at it with a long stick and then it would whoosh out, 5t in one lump.
The sugar spilled from the bins onto a gridmesh floor with a conveyor below to transfer the sugar to the main storage sheds.
You can imagine how lifelike the dead snakes became on the grid mesh.
Today's "B" doubles are purpose built side tippers and tip directly into the sugar shed.
Trucks were weighed before and after, all done and dusted in under a minute.
Huge queues waited for the Port to open in the morning but all the drivers were gentlemen allowing the Maryborough trucks to jump ahead.
They had the long slog back for another load in their poor little petrol Bedfords, 28t gross on a 7t Bedford towing a dog.
Grant Kenny's dad Hayden drove the Luya Julius trucks for a while, he was a Maryborough lad.

Yes I think Greg Quince did engineering, I was out of it when he would have still been studying.
Sure wish I could trace that grey Beaver Pete, hit a dead end though.
