Old Dog,
Not good for Cootes but obviously there were endemic on-going problems (which they admitted). Easy to say it is a witch-hunt by the government but the fuel companies pulling their business tells of a bigger story - though I believe it has more to do with Coote's competitive prices and service than any distress at bad publicity.
As I said, not good for Cootes and their people but has almost zero impact on Australia as a whole. Fuel still has to be carried and their misfortune is good fortune for the new contractor and his people.
Everyone knows what the rules are, whether they agree with them or not. It's dog eat dog out there and if you don't run your business to a high standard the mutt from next door will steal your bone.

I don't think it makes any difference which transport company gets the Shell contract, once a company becomes too big all control is lost and it becomes a game of which division of the company can earn the most profit, usually cutting rates to acquire work knowing full well that the rates are unsustainable......every thing then suffers!!!. I have subbed for TNT when ASP were merged. The TNT rates were 20% cheaper and some divisions were losing up to $60,000 per day.......management didn't seem to care just waited for the payouts!!!!!. their equipment were beyond belief even some trailers splitting in half due to ASP heavy boxes on TNT lightweight trailers. When i carted oil i spoke to several TOLL tanker drivers who although were paid well, complained about the maintenance and i used to help them unload. Driver up top, me working the valve area. I remember doing quick fixes to help the driver get going. Before anymore needless accidents are stopped the industry needs to have a bloody good look at itself..... The "Hillbilly" days of the past must stay in the past!!!!!
